Thigh snaffle / toggle snaffle with olive head

A thigh snaffle or gag snaffle is very similar to a water snaffle in terms of its effect in the mouth (ie on the tongue and bar). The shanks, and this is a big advantage from our point of view, ensure that the bit is guided more gently at the corners of the mouth and can therefore make the rein aids easier for the horse to understand.

They also undoubtedly prevent the bit from being pulled through the mouth in the event of stronger impacts (which of course should not occur) and thus causing injuries.

That's why thigh snaffles are the bits that are among our favorites.

The bit is the connection between the rider's hand and the horse's sensitive mouth. To make it easier for your horse to recognize the help given, you should pay attention to a few points:

1. The good condition of the horse's mouth

- the corners of the mouth/jaws must not be sore.

- Hooking, sharp corners on the teeth or toothache require veterinary attention.

- certain dentures with a lot of tongue freedom are unsuitable for some palate shapes.

2. A bit in good condition that matches your horse's level of training and physical abilities (musculature and flexibility). It's no use asking the horse to do something impossible.

3. A great deal of humility on your part: Did I behave correctly to achieve the desired result?

You need to choose the right bit size.

- Too small, it pinches and can hurt the corners of the mouth.

- Too big, it won't have the desired, precise effect. The bit must lie in the corners of the mouth in such a way that the beginning of a fold forms.
